Case Study: Medical Facility

CASE STUDY: Medical Facility

In December of 2022, a local medical facility experienced a burst sprinkler head due to the extreme freezing temperatures. The sprinkler flooded out multiple rooms in their primary care offices. The water from the overhead sprinkler affected drywall, carpeted floor covering, cove base, and suspended ceiling tiles. SKY Restoration DKI arrived on site the same day and began immediate extraction of water to reduce migration and secondary damage.

Containment barriers were constructed, and proper signage was placed to secure the work areas. Once a moisture assessment was completed, the areas that needed for demolition and removal were marked, and demolition was completed. Saturated drywall and wet insulation were removed from the source areas. The cove base was removed from walls and interior core drilling to allow for proper wall cavity drying. Wet suspended ceiling tiles were removed and disposed of properly. Based on the square footage of the affected area, source of loss, category, and class of water, the equipment calculations were run and the appropriate amount of drying equipment was placed. Commercial grade Phoenix R250 LGR Dehumidifiers, Phoenix Air Max Radial air movers, and Phoenix Guardian R Hepa Air filtration devices were placed to properly dry the structure. Drying was monitored daily and once all affected structures were dried to pre-loss condition, the affected areas were cleaned and disinfected using an EPA-registered disinfectant.

A letter of recommendation was written by the facility manager, which included this excerpt:

“… I received a call back from DKI within 20 minutes of my initial call in to DKI needless to say the competitor took my name and did not return a call until 24 hours later. DKI was on site within 3 hours after I made contact with them and was setting up dehumidifiers and fans to remove the water and moisture from the carpet, flooring and walls in the area that
had been damaged by water. They set up barriers to keep air born contaminates and isolation to the area affected. This also helped in keeping staff and or patients from entering this area. DKI had someone to contact me every 12 to 18 hours letting me know the status of the area they were taking care for us. Within 24 four hours DKI provided me with a detailed report of how and what they were doing to resolve the water and moisture problem I had in writing. They also had
sent a detailed report in the same email of a quote for repair and removal of the flooring and wall base that need to be removed in order to meet IICRC regulations in the restoration industry. These guidelines are a standard scope of care to prevent illnesses, cross contamination, and any microbial growth to the structure. DKI staff were very knowledgeable,
professional and courteous while preforming their work. The staff at DKI understood the issues and challenges of a Healthcare environment. I would recommend DKI for any building restoration services, including disaster restoration, industrial hygiene services, construction, and renovation. I have DKI as the first and main contact for emergency issues due to water, smoke, wind and environmental concerns.”
